  1. The main difference is that a Dom is always dominant, while a Top can be dominant or submissive. Being a Dom means being dominant in all aspects of BDSM, as well as in all aspects of life. Doms are dominant to their submissives both during the BDSM scenes and in everyday life. They make decisions, demand, lead and expect the submissives to obey. Doms never follow the instructions, while the tops may do so. The top person stimulates the bottom partner in BDSM play, but it doesn’t mean that he or she makes the decisions. Tops can actually be submissive and just obey the Doms’ wishes when Doms want them to be Tops in BDSM play. Submissive Tops can be dominant in relation to another submissive, but never when they relate with a Dom. One more thing, being a Top ins’t about your relationship, it’s always about play. On the other hand, a Dom is always a Dom. In BDSM scenes, in relationships or in marriage, a Dom is always dominant, and therefore he or she can demand from a Sub to be a Top during the BDSM plays.
