Could childhood molestation be the cause of my BDSM tendencies?

I am super into BDSM and I have been very active in the community for years now. However, recently I have started to wonder whether my absolute disinterest in any form of “normal,” vanilla sex could stem from the fact I was sexually abused as a child? The possibility that this might be the cause of my BDSM preferences is really scary to me. I am starting to feel like a complete freak and a dysfunctional person.

  1. Certain scientists, including Freud, have argued that some sexual preferences, such as masochism, as well as a preference to a submissive sexual role, might stem from some form of history of sexual abuse, as the person might be trying to gain control of the sexual trauma by reenacting it in a safe, consensual environment with shared control and a trusted partner. This would be one logical explanation of a person’s tendency towards BDSM practices. As to whether it is normal or not, it largely depends on the person’s perception of his or her own sexual practices and desires. If they are causing any kind of conflict, frustration or complex, it might be a good idea to seek professional help, mainly to deal with the sexual trauma experienced in the past. On the other hand, sadomasochistic preferences do not have to be connected to trauma at all. Some people simply emjoy BDSM and that’s all there is to it. However, if you intuitively feel there might be a connection between your sexual preferences and your sexual trauma, it would probably be useful to talk to a therapist to get to the bottom of it and move on.
