  1. First of all, even though it may make sense to tie the ropes looser, it’s actually going to increase the risk of burns, because as you move the ropes, they will move against the skin, causing friction and eventually some nasty burns. If you tie them really tight, the skin will move with the ropes, and there will be no friction. This can be tricky because, obviously, you don’t want to tie them too hard and disrupt the blood flow. Also, try to avoid ropes made of nylon or other artificial materials. Cotton is ideal, because it produces less friction. On the other hand, jute and hemp are also natural materials but we all know how nasty they can be to the skin. The best thing is to try the rope on yourself before using it in some demanding plays and especially before using it for suspension. If you’re doing a lengthy scene, consider placing some fabric underneath the knots, protecting at least that part of the skin. And please, take rope burns seriously. They can be just as bad as thermic burns. If you do get a burn, consider seeing a doctor because it can get infected and cause considerable problems. Keep the burn clean and dry and apply some antibiotic ointment.
