  1. The first two letters in the acronym BDSM – “B” and “D” stand for “bondage” and “discipline.” Bondage is an erotic practice in which one partner ties, bonds or restricts the other partner, consensually of course, using various common or specialized ropes, ties, threads and other objects. Discipline is the dynamic relationship between a dom (dominant partner) and a sub (submissive partner) which involves a set of rules and various discipline methods for braking those rules. The punishment can be physical (spanking, slapping, whipping, crushing, burning, pinching, etc) or psychological (public exposure, humiliation, verbal abuse, etc). The other two letters in the acronym – “S” and “M,” stand for “sadism” and “masochism” respectively. Sadism, in simple terms, is sexual excitement and gratification from inflicting pain and suffering to others. The pain and suffering can be physical, emotional and psychological. Masochism, on the other hand, is sexual excitement or gratification from one’s own pain or humiliation, which, again, can be physical, emotional or psychological. The two practices are obviously complementary, which is why sadists and masochists often end up in quite harmonious relationships.
